Day 26: 10 Films You Think Everyone Should Watch and Why - Part 1

  1. The Orphanage (El Orfanato)
This is my favorite movie. This is one of the handful of horror movies I’ve seen that is actually tasteful. Most scary movies I’ve seen seem to have scaring the audience as the end goal, but this movie uses fear to emphasize the idea that love and faith can help you do anything, even things that scare the living crap out of you. I also like how it explores faith without really attaching it to a specific religion.
  2. Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street
This is my favorite movie. The songs aren’t really as catchy as those of other musicals, but I like the discomfort that comes from the combination of the jaunty tunes and the dark themes. It’s a really tragic story, but it shows how the abuse of power affects people. Actually, all of the movies in this list can be about power dynamics. Actually, I think every movie ever is about power dynamics.
  3. Sucker Punch
This is my favorite movie. Every scene is a visual and musical masterpiece. I also like all of the symbolism in it. I don’t think it’s very well written though, and I think it sends really mixed messages in terms of its “feminist” messages. Actually, it’s not very well written at all. I mostly like it for the worlds it creates and the emotions it evokes. If anyone watches this movie, I recommend keeping this in mind.
  4. The Princess and The Frog
This is my favorite movie. It’s a nice change from most other Disney movies in the sense that although it’s filled with tons of magic, Tiana doesn’t rely on magic to help her dreams come true. On the contrary, it shows that magic, when used to try to take the easy way, can be destructive (ever notice that the villain’s name, Facilier, comes from the French word for “easy?”). Instead, they emphasize hard work as the way to make your dreams come true, but I like that they do it without promoting an individualistic, bootstrap mentality. Tiana tries to do things on her own at first, but only succeeds after she accepts help and support from others.
  5. Easy A
This is my favorite movie. It shows what can happen if you do too much to help others and neglect yourself. I also like all the sarcasm and sass.
  6. Hairspray
This is my favorite movie. Music, being comfortable in your own skin, civil rights, Zac Efron, what’s not to love?

I’m stuck, I guess I’ll finish these next year haha.

Day 25: Guilty Food, Music and Movie/TV Pleasure

My guilty food pleasure is Oreos. I really shouldn’t eat them as much as I do, and I definitely shouldn’t eat as much as I eat in one sitting.

My guilty music pleasure is the soundtrack to Cirque de la Mer, one of the summer shows at Sea World. The guilt isn’t really in the fact that I like the music itself, but in the fact that I bought the soundtrack.

Day 24: What You Are Excited About For This Christmas

I really was excited about everything. I wanted to see my little brother and my cousins open their presents and I was excited to eat a lot. I was also excited to be with family, as usual.

I guess something I told myself I would do was spend time with my real dad and his side of my family around Christmas time this year, so I was looking forward to that, but I never got around to contacting him and he never called me or my brother, but I still want to see them soon so I should call.

Day 23: A Photo That Makes You Feel Something
This photo made me feel incredibly sad when I first saw it. It was at my cousin’s high school graduation, and it’s all of my cousins on my mom’s side. I felt really left out, but it was my fault that I wasn’t there in the first place.
I could have put any picture though, because any picture I see makes me feel something, haha.

Day 22: The Reason You Started Using Tumblr and The Reason For Your Tumblr Name

I wanted to make a tumblr for documentation and reflection. I try to remind myself of that all the time, but I don’t always keep it at that.

Even though that was why I wanted to make one for a really long time, the reason I actually ended up making one was this post by my good friend Marynoelyn. Once I found out I was featured on a tumblr post, I couldn’t resist making my own.

My tumblr name is a reference to an affirmation used in radio transmissions in military communications. I chose this because my name is Roger.

All obviousness aside, a lot of people wonder why I use the triple letters. I originally used this handle on AIM because both rogerthat and rrogerthatt were already taken, and I guess I figured I would just keep adding letters until I found one that worked. When I made this tumblr, I didn’t even check if the ones with less letters were taken, I just used this one because I was already used to typing it.

Day 21: Your Greatest Phobia and Your Most Irrational Phobia

Super late, but I’m gonna get these done before midnight!

I think my greatest phobia is bad results. If I have to do something, but I’m worried that things won’t turn out the way I want them to, then I’ll procrastinate or I won’t end up doing it at all. I think it’s my greatest phobia because it’s the one that leads me to hold myself back the most.

I’m working on being comfortable with making mistakes and learning from them to do better next time, but I’ve been trying to work on it for a long time. We’ll see where that goes.

I can’t think of any irrational phobias except I guess my fear of the supernatural and the paranormal. I can watch ghost movies and stuff if I know it’s not real, but when I hear aout people’s actual experiences I just die. I don’t know if it’s necessarily a phobia because it doesn’t really prevent me from living my life normally, and I like going to haunted places and stuff if I’m with friends. It only prevents me from sleeping, haha.

Day 20: Someone Who Shares The Same Birthday As You - Part 2
Wikipedia just told me that Mae Whitman, the actress who plays Roxie Richter in Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, also has the same birthday as me, but unlike Donny and Depp, she was born in the same year as me! I just had to include her too.
She also plays Katara in the Avatar: The Last Airbender series, Yuffie Kisaragi in Kingdom Hearts II, and Tinkerbell in those damn movies. That is a great resume.

Day 20: Someone Who Shares The Same Birthday As You

I couldn’t pick just one.

Donald Duck’s birthday is different in different cartoons, but the release date of the cartoon with Donald’s first appearance is recognized by Disney as his actual birthday. I know it technically isn’t a birthday because he’s not real and he was never born, but I still think it’s cool.

Johnny Depp looks so, so, so cute here. I tried to find a more recent picture of him and one from a photoshoot or something, but I couldn’t stop looking at this one. Also, he and Donald kind of have the same pose in these pictures, so I’ll leave it at these.

Day 19: The First Wedding/Funeral You’ve Been To

The earliest that I can recall is my aunt and uncle’s wedding in the Philippines. I was either the ring bearer or the coin bearer and my brother was whichever one I wasn’t. We were around 4 and 5 at the time. If you’ve seen the episode of Little Bill where he thought he was going to be a bear, since it sounds like “ring bear,” that was definitely us, too.

Day 18: A Photo Of You When You Were Young
That’s the best outfit I’ve ever worn.
