Can You Tell The Difference Between A Men’s Magazine And A Rapist?
Well, this is upsetting. According to a new study, people can’t tell the difference between quotes from British “lad mags” and interviews with convicted rapists. And given the choice, men are actually more likely to agree with the rapists. [x]
My friend and I are repulsed by these results. I can’t talk about it anymore. However, I would like to share this with you so you could share it with other people. Take the quiz and make others take the quiz, too.
oh my fucking god.
I took the quiz and I failed. It’s disgusting that any sort of magazines print that kind of language and sentiment. It just lets readers think it’s ok for them to think stuff like that.
First of all! I do find a majority of this to be disgusting. and ^ is right, it’s bad because it lets readers think that it’s okay to think like that.
Second of all! I in no way think this is okay. There is a difference between pointing out bias and saying that the person at fault is not guilty. I do not think this is okay.
Third of all! I’m going to restress the first two points for good measure! A good portion of this is disgusting and I do not think it’s okay!
Now let’s get down to business!
Okay to start, some of these listed aren’t so bad. For example 3, 6, 13, 15 (anal sex, dirty talk, domination, and bondage respectively) are simply fetishes. While it may sound crude on paper, I don’t think there’s anything wrong with it. Some people may be appalled, but hey, some people like that in the bedroom and that’s their business. These quotes may simply be out of context. Speaking of out of context, what the heck is 10 even talking about? A woman on a dock accused of murder? Tbh unless this guy likes having sex with murderers (and the murderer is the woman in this case), this is simply another fetish, role play. So I believe those quotes mentioned are quite alright.
Next point! Girls “asking for it” in the way they dress! This is seen in 1, 2, 11, and 14. Yeah so this is shameful talk. But it could also be out of context. The reader is in the “this is said by a rapist” mindset and so is pre-conditioned by the author to react negatively to these. What if the reader was in the clubbing state of mind. What if I told you that yeah, there are both guys and girls alike out there who are looking for a one night stand (#14 is exempt from this because it basically is a rape quote, not possible for it to fit the “one night stand” thing). Right now, this is all about society and how they view males looking for a one night stand as predators and women looking for the same as whores (note that extreme “feminists” view it as predator vs “empowered woman confident in her sexuality,” which is completely unfair). And that’s a whole ‘nother blog post, that would take a lot more talking, which I’m not going to add to this post. (I hate extreme feminists, btw, but that’s a whole ‘nother blog post too. I hate them more than stuck up vegans. That’s saying a lot.) But anyways, think about that, and how you view those people before you go accusing guys of being predators, and guys, please think twice before you assume she’s “easy” (not my word of choice, but couldn’t think of anything more politically correct. sorry).
About that, I think Dave Chapelle said it quite nicely. Paraphrased:
Guys, she’s not a whore just because she’s dressed like that. I may wear a police man’s uniform, that doesn’t make me a policeman. But don’t you think someone might confuse me as one? So to you ladies that dress like that: You’re not a whore. But you sure as hell wear a whore’s uniform. Don’t blame a guy if he gets confused.
Next point!
This isn’t so much related directly to the actual article, but also I want you to keep in mind that this problem is not female specific. I’m gonna repeat that. This is not female specific. Guys have this problem too. I didn’t bookmark the articles, but I have read articles about guys being completely objectified. Not so much about sex though… but rather, money, children, etc.
Ummm, yeah.
Again, I’d like to restate that I’m not saying any of this is right, I’m just playing devil’s advocate, trying to get people to see a broader view by looking at things differently. So please don’t brand me as a rapist or someone who doesn’t respect women, that’s not what this post is about. Again as I say on all my political-ish posts, I like talking about these things, if you wanna discuss it with me then go ahead! I’m open to new viewpoints.
Very true, I’ve said before that I think sex is more enjoyable when both partners have equal amounts of control, but that’s just my preference and I let that cloud my judgment. Still, I hope these magazines made it clear that these practices should only be done if both or all of the people involved know that that’s what the other people want.
