Day 26: 10 Films You Think Everyone Should Watch and Why - Part 1

  1. The Orphanage (El Orfanato)
This is my favorite movie. This is one of the handful of horror movies I’ve seen that is actually tasteful. Most scary movies I’ve seen seem to have scaring the audience as the end goal, but this movie uses fear to emphasize the idea that love and faith can help you do anything, even things that scare the living crap out of you. I also like how it explores faith without really attaching it to a specific religion.
  2. Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street
This is my favorite movie. The songs aren’t really as catchy as those of other musicals, but I like the discomfort that comes from the combination of the jaunty tunes and the dark themes. It’s a really tragic story, but it shows how the abuse of power affects people. Actually, all of the movies in this list can be about power dynamics. Actually, I think every movie ever is about power dynamics.
  3. Sucker Punch
This is my favorite movie. Every scene is a visual and musical masterpiece. I also like all of the symbolism in it. I don’t think it’s very well written though, and I think it sends really mixed messages in terms of its “feminist” messages. Actually, it’s not very well written at all. I mostly like it for the worlds it creates and the emotions it evokes. If anyone watches this movie, I recommend keeping this in mind.
  4. The Princess and The Frog
This is my favorite movie. It’s a nice change from most other Disney movies in the sense that although it’s filled with tons of magic, Tiana doesn’t rely on magic to help her dreams come true. On the contrary, it shows that magic, when used to try to take the easy way, can be destructive (ever notice that the villain’s name, Facilier, comes from the French word for “easy?”). Instead, they emphasize hard work as the way to make your dreams come true, but I like that they do it without promoting an individualistic, bootstrap mentality. Tiana tries to do things on her own at first, but only succeeds after she accepts help and support from others.
  5. Easy A
This is my favorite movie. It shows what can happen if you do too much to help others and neglect yourself. I also like all the sarcasm and sass.
  6. Hairspray
This is my favorite movie. Music, being comfortable in your own skin, civil rights, Zac Efron, what’s not to love?

I’m stuck, I guess I’ll finish these next year haha.
