This article is just terrible. Actually, this article has great advice if you have access to all of the things he suggests.
The main problem here is that he’s saying what he would do in a situation that he has never experienced and knows nothing about. He only considers the individual’s time and motivation as the only factors that allow them to succeed. He says they should do whatever research and relationship-building they can to get where they need to go.
Not everyone can buy SparkNotes books or take coding classes online or travel to find guidance counselors that their schools and neighborhoods might not have. Some kids don’t have time to do all of that because they have to work to support their families. Some kids can’t use study websites or Skype because they don’t have internet access. Especially if their dad doesn’t happen to be a contributor for Forbes.
But again, if he wrote this as an article for students who have access to all of these things, it would be priceless advice.
